🛼 The Story of Skate Truck Texas

Born from a lifelong love of roller skating, Skate Truck Texas is more than just a mobile skate shop — it’s a movement on wheels!

The story began in New York City in 2012, when I, Gypsy Lucas, a lifelong roller skater, was searching for a place to skate. To my surprise, there wasn’t a single roller rink open in the five boroughs. During a holiday visit to my dad, Charlie Lucas, at Skate Waco, I spotted a box truck in the parking lot loaded with 300 pairs of roller skates. When I asked what he planned to do with them, he said, “I don’t know — why, what do you want to do?”

That question sparked everything. With my husband Tristan, we dreamed up a wild idea: renting roller skates in Central Park. After weeks of red tape, persistence, and a few “no’s,” we finally got the “yes” that changed everything. Skate Truck NYC launched its first rental day in Prospect Park, Brooklyn, in June 2012 — bringing skating back to the streets of New York!

We rolled through festivals, block parties, schools, and even high-rise events. The joy was contagious — skates spinning, music playing, and smiles everywhere.

In 2014, life led us back home to Texas. The original NYC truck made the long drive south (with me behind the wheel!), and Skate Truck Texas was born. After a few quiet years parked at a local rink, the truck found its spark again in 2019, when I returned to Waco to help lead operations at Skate Waco.

Now in 2025, Skate Truck Texas is rolling stronger than ever — equipped with 150 pairs of outdoor skates, protective gear, and a growing team of certified instructors. Together, we bring the joy of skating to schools, festivals, and communities all across Central Texas.
